For my friends in Turkey, with love

I'm pretty sure my cookie baking days have come to a close.

While shopping at Joanne Fabrics a few weeks ago I noticed adorable cookie tins for dirt cheap and it dawned on me that I have to do teacher gifts this year! And the 2 kids between them have like 6 teachers! So, unable to resist the cute cheap cookie tins, I bought six and proudly came home with my gift plan.

Yes, it involved lots of butter and more of my time, but I felt like I owed it to my Turkey friends to do this tremendous bang up cookie baking job this year. They, of all people, would appreciate choosing the perfect recipe, having every possible ingredient accessible, and the reward of soft, tasty, truly sweet cookies to show for it. So, in their honor and memory, I set to work.

And then today, as I filled the last of the tins with the last of my sweat effort, I realized that this was the most ridiculous gift I could give. In a land where soft, tasty, truly sweet cookies can be found even in the gas station and small, adorable, perfectly packaged gifts can be purchased even for pets why was I spending the same amount of money and an infinite amount of time on something they probably won't appreciate and maybe won't even like (though my cookies ARE good!)?

My Mom taught me by example, but I'm wondering if it's an outdated practice? She assured me today that as someone who works in the schools it will be THE most appreciated gift, but I'm doubtful. Encouraged, but doubtful (sorry Mom).

Maybe it's just another cross culture blunder I'm destined to have for years to come?

To give you some extra encouragement (and this is honest), I also think the cookies will be very appreciated. It always meant a lot to me when I got thoughtful gifts from students/parents...especially when it was obvious time and thought was put into it.

As a schoolteacher myself--and one heckuva cookie fanatic--your cookies will always be welcome if you send them in my direction c/o Casey and Brian :-)

I would've much rather received some homemade cookies than the lone Christmas gift I received from a student: a Holiday-themed mug that I can use for one week a year. Whee.

You crack me up! I did cookies for Ian's teachers this year. I don't think that ever goes out of style. =)
