As an addendum to the fair trade halloween candy, I want to add that I'm not advocating a boycott of all chocolate. An actual boycott could severely affect the small farmers who are barely surviving by honest means. And besides, the bad guys have already made their profit. Nor am I insinuating that the large chocolate companies aren't aware of or are turning a blind eye to the fact that they have child labor in their supply chain. They have painfully been made aware and are working together to clean up the supply chain. The bulk of the problem lies in the national governments' enforcing the law and cleaning up corruption in their ranks. Reality is, cocoa farmers harvest their beans and sell to a broker. The broker takes all the beans, from honest farms as well as farms using slave labor, and passes it down the supply chain. By the time it reaches the hands of major chocolate buyers, child labor is mixed in with the whole lot. That's the sad deal. But you know what? It's the sad deal of a lot more products than we'd ever assume.
So, go buy your halloween candy and don't feel guilty because of me. I just wanted you to be a more informed consumer and to share with you where I am personally heading.
