Fair Trade Halloween Candy

Loyal followers know that I had a moral dilemma last Easter when I had recently learned so much about the cocoa industry using child labor. I won't go into details again, but basically nearly 40% of the world's chocolate comes from West Africa where over 400,000 children are thought to be used as laborers, 12,000 of whom are forced, to harvest the cocoa beans. It's not just the labor either, but the pesticides used on sugar cane or the machinery used to harvest, that endangers small children's lungs and hands, preventing them from a viable future.

Last week I was tempted at Target to purchase the dirt cheap, 2 for $5 bags of yummy chocolate for Halloween. But that same day I received an email from my coffee supplier, Equal Exchange, advertising chocolate mini bars. It was a thankful reminder and an opportunity to be proactive. I did a little research and just ordered a kit of chocolate coins and little Fair Trade cards to hand out on Halloween. Thought I'd share the link for any of you who are interested.
