But there are little reminders that they haven't always come from here...
While watching the lovely movie Enchanted for the upteenth time, Aidan remarked how surprised he was that the characters were being so loud in their apartment! I mean, their footsteps and dancing and singing... what about the neighbors below?!?!?! (We would get broomstick bangs on our floorboards if the kids were too loud in Turkey. In the last place we stayed, we had to keep the kids out of the bedrooms after they woke until 8am because of cranky, noise sensitive downstairs neighbors.)
This afternoon, while searching the surrounding yards for missing nerf darts Ella excitedly screamed, "Mommy! We found one in the garden next to ours!" The word for any plot of green space connected to a home in Turkish is "bahce" or garden. Though she wouldn't remember the word, it seems Ella has kept the translation into English. It wasn't a yard, but a garden (ugly brown grass and dying trees though it is.)
These glimpses into a world beyond gives me hope that none of us will ever forget the place that we once called home.

gah, that last sentence stuck in my throat and brought tears. For me, its the smells that bring back the memories of childhood in a foreign land.
I'll share.
Ha! I find myself actually telling someone to "open" the lights, or that I didn't receive their phone call because my phone was "closed."
A few other phrases and words pop up quickly, too. Maybe it's God's gentle way of saying, "Don't forget."
