The Stoning of Soraya M.

The other night I found myself hating men and hating their interpretation of Islam. Chris and I watched the Stoning of Soraya M. in horrific silence, bursting into tears at its close, pleased to have heard her story, honoring her life in remembering her pain. It is not a film for the faint of heart, but one of such power!

I couldn't help thinking of the Biblical story of the woman "caught in adultery." I always wondered how that really happened and where her partner was. I have a greater cultural context now to see that she may have merely smiled at a man who was not her husband; that in a culture where women are not honored, a small transgression could result in a sinister death.

How different Jesus was among men! What grace and mercy, unknown to such men as these. What dignity bestowed on the image of his father he must have seen in the woman.

Oh that Soraya had known Jesus...
